Scores of people from within and outside the Kumasi metropolis last Thursday swarmed up the newly opened Kumasi City Mall to either catch a glimpse of the magnificent edifice or purchase some of the highly reduced items that were on display.

With almost half of the shops stocked with items and opened for business patrons and first timers feasted their eyes on things on display.

Interestingly, those who had prepared their pockets bought home some of the items on display at highly discounted prices.

With school children on vacation, some of them in the company of their parents were seen taking advantage of the kiddie portion of the mall and enjoying themselves with things on display.

SECURITY:

With about 4,000 people storming in and out of the mall security was at its peak as managers seemed to have anticipated the outcome as they had personnel of the police administration placed at vantage points to ensure safety and security.

There were other private security guards also on alert both at the underground and open car parks.

As at the time of our visit, we could see some of the plain clothes security persons mingling with the public to ensure no thief takes advantage of the huge numbers and perpetrate any robbery.

Special ambulances as well as fire service vans were also seen at vantage points to ensure they deal with emergencies.

SHOPS.

Apart from Shoprite and Game who have big shops at the mall, about 50 percent of the shops that were unoccupied at an earlier tour by the media were busily worked on this time as private and corporate entities had taken over the shops.

From technological appliances to kid’s toys, every household or domestic furniture including brand new vehicles were on sale at the opening.

Many shop owners had deployed innovative ways of marketing their wares at the mall as some had employed the services of trained ushers who brandished brochures and leaflets of things their shops had on display.

Adding colour to the opening were some traditionally attired players of the fontomfrom drum as well as dancers of various local tunes.

BOARD CHAIRMAN:

Kumasi City Mall b0ard chairman, Mr Kofi Sekyere

In a brief chat with the media, Mr Kofi Sekyere, Board Chairman of KCM expressed delight at the level of patronage by the public.

According to him, the prospects looked encouraging since the items and businesses that were being done at the mall were at highly subsidized rates.

Mr Sekyere noted that KCM at its first day of opening had been able to provide about 1,000 jobs to artisans, cleaners and other essential workers.

He promised to ensure standards at the mall were maintained to ensure the mall becomes the best choice of shopping and an avenue for conducting business.
