The Corporate Business Development Executive in charge of Mobile Money, MTN-Ghana and Mr Abdul-Rauf Majid says mobile money still remains the safest platform to send and receive money through the use of the handset.

With a subscriber base of Nine million, Mr Majid said the MTN mobile money platform continues to provide the fastest and safest form of money transfers across the regions of the country.

Speaking at an outdoor sensitization forum at Dr Mensah, a market arena in Kumasi during the launch of the mobile money month which for the past six years is marked in the month of August, the MTN Executive expressed the company’s resolve to progressively deal with challenges the platform faces.

According to him, mobile money fraud remains the challenge on the MOMO system but added that with the collaboration with the Police E-crime unit the company is hopeful to bring the menace to its barest minimum if not completely dealt with.

He, however, tasked the public especially market women to be watchful of the activities of fraudsters and urged them to report any message requesting them to either send or pay money to the one calling to MTN officials.

STRIDES:

With the rapidly changing times and the quest for business people to have access to ready cash for their transactions, Mr Majid intimated the important role of the MOMO system in the lives of the people.

With 77,000 merchants spread across the country, the MTN Executive noted the readiness of his outfit to serve customers who either send or receive money through the platform.

Currently, Mr Majid disclosed beneficiaries of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP), a social intervention policy are paid through the MOMO platform.

The Executive also disclosed the company had reached an agreement with the Ghana School Feeding Program (GSFP) to pay caterers through the platform.

These, he mentioned will make the work of officials of the LEAP and GSFP easier since they will be able to pay beneficiaries with just the click of a button on their handsets.

Mr Majid announced the commencement of transactions with low amounts as 5cedis on the platform. This, he said is termed the wallet to wallet transactions which will enable trotro drivers as well as taxi drivers to transact business with passengers while on the road.

POLICE:

Addressing the public later at the event, Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Godwin Ahianyo cautioned people against the rush in parting away with money for supposed awards by these mobile networks.

According to him, that is one of the latest techniques designed by fraudsters to dupe unsuspecting people.

He warned that any call asking for the payment of money or for the resending of supposed cash mistakenly deposited in one’s mobile money account be disregarded.

He stressed that on no condition should one disclose his or her pin number to merchants or agents providing these mobile money services.

Mr Ahianyo, however, commended MTN for carrying out periodic outdoor sensitization forums to bring awareness to the public of the activities of fraudsters on the mobile money platform.
